What You Need to Know About Heather Burke

How did you first become interested in marketing?

I first became interested in marketing while working at a print shop in college while obtaining my B.A in Studio Art focused on large format photography. I earned a reputation of doing custom work for customers designing marketing materials. I loved the problem solving aspect of it and creating something to enhance a brand.

I still have a passion for Fine Art but the ability to see a direct result from my efforts was addictive, and therefore I returned to school to obtain a B.B.A in Integrated Marketing Communications.

What is your current favorite band or food?

I have eclectic taste in music and struggle to find favorites but as of late Iron and Wine is frequenting my playlist the most. As for food, pancakes reign supreme in my book!

What would you recommend to visitors of your corner of the world (TN)? Were you born and raised there? If so, what has kept you there and if not what took you there?

I was actually born in the Aloha State! I come from a military family and grew up in a combination of a few different states including Hawaii, New York and Oklahoma but I have lived in Tennessee the longest. My dad was a New Yorker originally and my mom is a Tennessee native so living in both was a good equalizing upbringing for me. I moved back to Tennessee to be with my high school sweetheart, who is now my husband.

East Tennessee is very unique; for anyone wanting to visit the area, fall is breathtaking and has amazing weather. We have four distinct seasons and rolling hills nestled into the Appalachian Mountains. The region is rich with history, a very distinct culture and offers outdoor activities galore. The pace here is unhurried and is inhabited by friendly locals, if a region can be described as "cozy" this is it.

What is your most favorite place you've traveled to?

Seoul, South Korea! I was fortunate enough to be able to travel to Seoul two years ago and it was a life-changing trip for me. Traveling to South Korea was a bucket list item for me for several years following my immersion into the culture triggered by my obsession with K-dramas. I highly recommend South Korea for anyone considering a destination in Asia.

I hope to make it back to Seoul soon and add Tokyo to the trip as well!

When you're not at your desk, what are you most likely doing?

I am probably at the barn with my horse Hudson, I am an avid equestrian and compete in jumping events mostly. If I am not at the barn I am probably hanging out with my dogs Sasha and Kiki. When spare time is available I am working on various different creative projects.

Are there any emerging martech or marketing trends that you're interested in or currently following?

The expansion in accessibility driven design and diversity in media representation is something I am currently following. I believe it's a new frontier for greater inclusion and revolutionizing the customer experience that is largely untapped.
