Cathy Morris

Marketing & Communications Director

With more than 12 years of marketing experience and a master's degree in Communication in Digital Media from the University of Washington, Cathy's passion is forging and strengthening relationships between organizations and their communities or clients. She also brings the unique perspective of knowing what it's like to be a Bear Group client. In her previous role managing digital communications at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, Cathy partnered with Bear Group to completely transform the museum's website.

She recently moved back to her hometown of East Wenatchee, Washington, with her husband and daughter to be closer to family and friends. When she’s not working, you will find Cathy looking up ways to tackle DIY home improvement projects, wine tasting, taking photos, or chasing after her toddler daughter.

What You Need to Know About Cathy Morris

How did you first become interested in marketing?

I had just given up the idea of becoming an accounting major at Pacific Lutheran University and decided to take a class that would get me back into my creative roots and inspire my next move. For me, that class was Introduction to Graphic Design in the Communications Department. I switched my major to Public Relations & Advertising and my professor encouraged me to join the PLU MediaLab team to help real clients with storytelling and marketing. I loved the entire process of planning and executive campaigns while tapping into my creativity throughout. I was hooked.

What is your current favorite band or food?

I have a hard time picking just one band! Some of my favorites are Twenty One Pilots, Lana Del Rey, and Of Monsters And Men. However, the one band that will always have a special place in my heart is Dave Matthews Band. I've seen them live in concert enough times to have lost count and recently had the opportunity to meet and photograph Dave while I was working at the Burke Museum. Listening to their music transports me right back to all of the fun concert weekends with friends at the Gorge Amphitheater so they will always have a special place in my heart for that reason.

What would you recommend to visitors of your corner of the world? Are you born and raised there? If so, what has kept you there and if not what took you there?

I recently moved from Seattle back to my hometown of East Wenatchee in North Central Washington, mostly to be closer to my family, but also because the Wenatchee Valley has a little bit of everything—including 300 days of sunshine each year! We’re in the middle of Washington’s up-and-coming wine region, 10 minutes from hiking trailheads, 25 minutes from snowboarding at Mission Ridge, and best of all, we’re only 45 minutes to Lake Chelan, a.k.a. my “happy place.”

What is your most favorite place you’ve traveled to?

I have a lot of international travel destinations still on my wishlist, but find myself wanting to go back to the island of Kauai for the amazing beaches, scenery, and hiking. I'm ready to introduce my daughter to the island.

When you’re not at your desk, what are you most likely doing?

You’ll likely find me doing an art project—either with my 3-year-old daughter, my childhood best friend, or on my own. I love trying new mediums and techniques and spend a little too much time getting inspiration for future projects on Pinterest.

Are there any emerging martech or marketing trends that you’re interested in or currently following?

I am intrigued by the personalization and AI in marketing today. Marketers are able to collect and analyze a vast amount of data about consumer’s online behavior to target marketing efforts. Many businesses are doing this responsibly, and others are not. Ultimately, we as consumers need to better educate ourselves about our online data and how it can be used.
