Commonly Asked Questions About Magento eCommerce

What is Magento?

Magento is an eCommerce platform that provides merchants with the ability to manage multiple webfronts. With a shopping cart system, catalogue management, and website content management tools, Magento provides admin with powerful website management capabilities that don't require web development or coding expertise to implement. Magento is also an open-source platform, which means that it's easy to customize, integrate with additional eCommerce operational tools, and update.

What is the difference between Magento Commerce and Magento Open Source?

Magento Open Source is available as a free download under the open-source OSL 3.0 license. Magento Commerce is licensed under a commercial license and available based on an annual subscription.

How many orders a day/hour can I run through Magento?

This is dependent more on the size of your server and the capability of your payment gateway than on Magento. The more powerful both are, the higher the volume of orders you can process.

How often do new updates come out, how often will we need to upgrade?

Magento updates are typically released every few months. Upgrades are only necessary when there is a critical security update. Otherwise, upgrades can be rolled into overall update projects for the site.

Is it a hosted application or on our own stack? What is needed for hosting?

It’s not hosted, so you will need to find a hosting provider. While this entails an extra step in the process, it also means complete freedom over your website’s code and total ownership of all data.

Do you offer any training?

Bear Group technical PM’s are available to provide training to end users of the system on an ongoing basis throughout development. There is very good written and video documentation for Magento, so we will focus on group or one‐to‐one training as needed. Our goal is to get everyone comfortable using the new system in their day‐to‐day work.

Can my customer service team use it to place orders directly?

Magento’s user interface allows you, and your service team, to directly access and manage live orders, as well as place orders directly within your system.

Can I test changes and updates to my website without making them live?

Yes. We will create a sandbox environment where full testing can take place in isolation from the production environment. This includes placing orders and mock payment processing.

How flexible is the theming?

As an open-source platform, Magento is completely receptive to custom theming. As a non-technical admin, Magento gives you a degree of control over the theming of your stores through the user interface, and also supports custom web design.

Can we import customer data, order history, products from our current store?

Our developers are experienced with data migrations. If you are interested in migrating your webstore to Magento, we can work with you to find a solution that preserves data from your current store.
